This year has been crap and just doesn't show signs of getting better. So far we have had almost $3000 in car repair expenses, 1 trip to the emergency room and a few day stay in the hospital, issues with our new couch and with Lazy-Boys repair people. This weekend saw Jan's car crap out again ($500), I applied an update to the database at work per supports request that has taken the database down, and while trivial to some I had craptacular brew session on Saturday.

The brew session started of with missing parts from the move and then one of my burners crapped out. Between me and the wife there were 3 trips to Northern Brewer at a cost of $100. Then to top it off a neighbor stopped by to see what I was doing. While talking with him I mixed up the wrong hop combination so I have no clue what the 1st batch at the new house is going to taste like. With my luck it will be the best beer ever and I'll have no way of recreate it.

Things have to get better right, please someone say right.

10" + of Snow affects my taste buds PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 February 2010 20:22

Watching more snow fall to add on to the 10" we already got and for what ever reason I'm totally digging the scotch ales I have in the house. Generally don't care for the scotch ales style as they tend to be to smokey or have to much peat malt in them. I started with Tyranea's Sheep Shagger and they just tasted really good. Maybe it's the snow or the pork I had for dinner but it just tasted so much better toady than it did this past weekend when I had a couple of the six pack. So after drinking the 2 Sheep Shaggers I had left i took the wifes Jeep, and braved the snow and ventured out to Discount Liquor to restock my shelves. I was hoping that there would be some cold Sheep Shagger's  but no luck. So I made up a Sprecher 4 pack of two Scotch ales and 2 Irish Stouts. A six pack of Capitol Mia Bock caught my eye so I grabbed that as well.

The Sprecher Scotch Ale is a little warm so the peat malt smokeyness came out more than I like but it was still tasting good. I would give it 36 out of 50 on a bjcp scale.

Tyranena's Sheep Shagger scores a 42 out of 50. Even when I had it this past weekend it wasn't as peaty as the Sprecher version and was just more enjoyable to me.

I will start stock piling Mai Bocks to do a big taste test on them as the next barrel I buy to but on tap will be a Mai Bock.

Side note I hope to get The Server Room Brewery up and running this weekend. Have no clue what I'm brewing. Would like to brew something that  the hops I have in stock, but all I have are hops that are more for lagers. Want to brew something with a quick turn around so I might just brew a Weiss for now and then a kolsch or something in a couple weeks.

Cabin Fever Bock is Back PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 11 January 2010 14:45

Seldom in life are you able to savor the quite hush like you can during the cold Wisconsin Winter. So New Glarus Brewing Company encourages you to relax with a ‘Cabin Fever Honey Bock’, their first seasonal release of 2010. This easy drinking Pale Bock is brewed with Clover Honey from Pure Sweet Honey of Verona, Wisconsin.

Bock beers first appeared in the 14th century and were traditionally aged over the long winter. Some even speculate that this is how the style got its name. The German word for ‘goat’ is ‘bock’ and the goat is the astrological symbol for those born during the height of winter making these brews confident Capricorns. The warm sweetness of Bock Beer insured their reputation as delicious ‘liquid bread’. They are so malty rich that these sturdy brews even sustained monks during the fasting of the Lenten Season.

New Glarus Brewing Company’s ‘Cabin Fever Honey Bock’ takes this classic style in a brighter direction than the traditional dark German Bock. Cabin Fever is a ‘Helles’ or Pale Bock with a golden color and lower strength than the German Style Dark Bock. This Pale Bock is brewed with an exclusive blend of Wisconsin Pale and Caramel Malts that balance seamlessly with a unique Lager Yeast and European hops.

Cool days draw us close to the warmth of home fires. This is the season to sip away the chill and embrace quiet evenings with friends and family. Whether you reminisce the passing summer sun or thrill to squeaky steps through drifting snow, one thing is certain about winter in Wisconsin, this too shall pass.
